Genealogical Society of Kendall County, Texas
The stories of the twenty-two men and one woman who have served as Sheriff of Kendall County, Texas from 1862 to the present reflect the saga of the development of the region from wild frontier to modern urbanization. Using primary sources, family records, personal interviews, and newspaper archives, we have profiled each of these sheriffs and their time in office. These profiles capture a rich and sometimes surprising historical heritage. Our first sheriff was the only Union sympathizer elected sheriff in a Confederate State. We have had the first African American sheriff in Texas since Reconstruction. One of our sheriffs was shot and killed and his wife became the sheriff. Less dramatic, but vitally important, has been the march toward creating a modern and efficient law enforcement agency. We present the record here and are pleased to acknowledge the service of all the Sheriffs of Kendall County.
