Topic:  Probate Records

Presenter:  Jack Gatewood, former member of the Texas Bar

Jack Gatewood will give a class on probate records.  Topics covered will be: wills, intestate (no will), and guardianship proceedings.  Outlined will be the process of creation of various types of will, functions of will, chronology of events from creation of the will to final distribution, significance of legal jargon, functions of the court, and location of probate records.  The difference between testate and intestate secession will be explained and how the court can be expected to go about distributing the estate of the deceased.  Finally working backwards, locating deeds and other legal evidence that an estate has been, or should be, probated.

The presentation will be in the first hour followed by Q&A and discussion.  The class will be repeated on Monday, February 4, at the same location and time.

Speaker - Cari Taplin. Cari is a native of Wood County, Ohio, but migrated to Wyoming, Colorado, and then to Pflugerville, Texas, just outside of Austin.  She is a Certified Genealogist (CG) and has served in a wide variety of volunteer and leadership positions for state, local, and national genealogical societies.  She currently serves on the boards of the Association for Professional Genealogists (APG) and the Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS).  As the owner of GenealogyPANTS, she provides speaking, research, and consultation services.
