Topic: "Growing Up in the 1940's and What Can Be Found in the 1940 Census"
The first half of the presentation is a remembrance of the 1940s from the perspective of a boy growing up then. It includes things like the daily life, food, entertainment, music and WWII. The second half deals with what can be found in the 1940 census and how to access it. This census, in which the government was attempting to assess the impact of the great depression, is one of the most detailed ever made and includes a housing census as well as a population census. Do you have indoor plumbing? Do you have a radio? Have you moved in the last 5 years. Are you working in the job you were trained for? How much money did you make last year? People in 1940 actually responded to very personal questions to which modern Americans would probably just refuse to answer.
